How Do You Master A Daunting Task?

We have all been there; standing in the middle of our imaginary room, surrounded by a mountain of things to do, overwhelmed and paralyzed into inaction. The goal seems so huge we would rather give up than try. We’ve all asked ourselves this question; How do you master a daunting task? Where do you start and how do you proceed?

A daunting task is just that; daunting. It is not easy to do, but most of the time it must be done. Starting a new business is daunting for most people. Yet, we know that we must find a way to overcome those obstacles if we want a shot at the life we dream about.

How do you go about overcoming a daunting task? Here are some of the steps I take to achieve those goals and projects that seem overwhelming.

I always remind myself that everyone has been there and I am not the only one. We have a tendency to feel alone in the face of adversity; reminding ourselves that we are not alone takes a great deal of the pressure off.
I make peace with the fact that I can only do what I can do when I can do it. The good news is that all I can do is enough to get me started and take me to the goal.
I break the task into bite size; again I can only do so much. Unless you make peace with this fact, you will sabotage your effort by trying to do more than you can.
I arm myself with patience, knowing that as long as I do what I have to do everyday, time will work for me and I start right where I am, with my only focus on doing what I can.

I have noticed that what usually delays the completion day is the time I spend worrying about how I am going to get it done. I also realized that I worry because I want to do more than I know I can and I am impatient.

That’s the reason it is very important to come to peace with the fact that you can only do so much everyday. If you stop worrying and wasting time trying to figure out better and faster ways to do it and just get to doing what you can, you will master the task a lot sooner than you expected.
